Tarot Reading: A Beginner's Guide

hey angels, ready for some witchcraft?

Tarot may seem daunting at first, but there is a much easier way to get yourself into the fortune-telling business than what the media is feeding you.

Step 1: Get a tarot deck. You can start simple and find cheap ones at your local Barnes and Noble or at a thrift store. The important trick to this step is finding the deck that has been trying to find you. Which design lives on the same wavelength as your soul? Which deck has been pulling you closer as the tension builds?
-Just as an example, I actually got my deck for free! My neighbor didn't want it and it eventually found its way to my hands. It was quite easy to realize that this deck was determined to find me.

Step 2: Cleanse your deck. Especially if you are not the first user of the deck, you will want to get rid of any bad energies that cling to your tarot cards. You can do this by using a clear crystal of your choice (I recommend Quartz or Selenite) to neutralize the energy. Another way this can be accomplished is by letting your deck bathe in the moonlight (note-NEVER cleanse your deck during a lunar eclipse/blood moon). Lastly, you can also let smoke from an incense or sage clear out any conflicting energies.

Step 3: Ready to predict your future? Lets start with the very basics.

Instead of memorizing each card, learn to interpret different symbols in the context of the questions that you ask. Make sure you also analyze the background of each card and the emotions that are visually represented. This will take some practice, but doing a reading every day can get you very far. Here's the major symbols you need to know:

  • Red Robes: Engaged with the material world/external reality, taking action, intense/charged emotion, embodied action, concentrated energy
  • Headpieces: conscious awareness, source of authority, a guide in decision-making, alignment with goals/desires, control and level-headed nature
  • Pillars: duality, polarity in energies, access to hidden knowledge/deeper insight, boundaries and structure, a need for balance
  • Cups:  Emotions, intuition, relationships (platonic or romantic), unconscious forces within the mind
  • Swords: Logic, problem solving, thoughts, conflict, truth
  • Wands: Inspiration, insight, growth, taking a new path, action, making a decision, sudden change of flow
  • Pentacles: physical wealth/finances, material possessions, physical health, a price you may have to pay, a fortune you may receive
Now that you understand the symbols, you need to know the Major Arcana:
  • The Fool: new beginnings, the potential for something more
  • The Magician: power, manifestation, spirituality
  • The High Priestess: intuition, mystery, interpretation
  • The Empress: nurturing, abundance, good fortune
  • The Emperor: structure, authority
  • The Lovers: relationships, choices
  • The Chariot: new direction, determination, movement
  • The Hermit: solitude, wisdom, insight
  • Strength: courage, inner power
After each reading/session, cleanse your deck again so there are no lingering energies.

Step 4: I've given you the spark you need to embark on your journey. Now, I must release you to learn on your own. Here are some resources I recommend:
  • Youtube: Red Fairy Tarot, Boho Witch Magic, The Tarot Shop UK
  • TikTok: Fae Sight Tarot, Abi the Yoga Witch, The Mystical Moon
